Xylan coating prevents leaks past thread
Pressure vessels, valves, pipe unions, storage tanks, reactors, pipelines and other fluid containment equipment are often fitted with threaded plugs for inspection, pressure relief, filling or tapping.

Coatings on pipe plugs not only improve their performance and reliability but also make them easier to use. A thin film of Xylan eliminates the PTFE tape normally wrapped around the threads to seal them.

In addition, the corrosion protection and low-friction properties of the coating greatly reduce breakout torques, enabling users to remove the plugs at a later date without destroying them.

In most instances, the pipe plugs may be re-used without difficulty.

Xylan coatings are also available in many colors, enabling users to color-code particular plug sizes and alloys.

Xylan 1014

Main Properties:

High temperature resistant. Low coefficient of friction. Abrasion / wear resistant. Dry film lubricant. Thermoset. Wide use temperature.

Typical Applications: Any mating surface which requires lubrication. Hinge pins. Piston casing. Compressors. Fasteners.

Description: Resin-bonded, thermosetting, dry-film lubricant which, when compared to Xylan 1010 contains significantly more bonding resin relative to its content of PTFE lubricant. Altering the formula in this manner produces finishes which are harder, more abrasion resistant, glossier, and less porous. Frictional values remain low and very predictable.

Xylan 1052

Main Properties:

High temperature resistant. High load carrying capacity. Abrasion / wear resistant. Thermoset.

Typical Applications: Applications to prevent wear of mating surfaces under extreme load such as bearings, sealing rings, and valve springs.

Typical Applications: Threaded fasteners.

Description: Resin-bonded, thermosetting, dry film lubricant. It is formulated for high-pressure, low-speed wear applications and provides long-term lubrication for bearing surfaces subjected to extreme pressures, up to 150,000 psi (10,500 kg/cm2). The coating utilizes a unique dual lubrication system of PTFE and MoS2 and is superior to  moly greases which wash away and PTFE coatings which  cold flow. Resin-bonded lubricants in Xylan 1052 stay on the job, even in harsh chemical environments.

Xylan 1070

Main Properties:

High temperature resistant. Low coefficient of friction. Abrasion / wear resistant. Thermoset. Wide use temperature. Corrosion resistant. Controlled torque.

Typical Applications: Threaded fasteners.

Description: Resin-bonded, thermosetting, PTFE based, dry-film lubricant. It has extra corrosion protection and issued to coat large studs (B7), nuts, flanges, and related hardware for sub-sea and splash-zone service. Because of its predictable, low-friction properties, less make-up torque is required to produce the specified tension. During assembly, clamp loads are increased; scatter is reduced. In fact, the frictional characteristics are the most predictable of any lubricant, coating, or plating used on bolting. The low friction properties also reduce break-out torque, which allows removal of bolting with a wrench instead of a blowtorch.
Application: Conventional spray.

Xylan 1400

Main Properties:

Corrosion resistant. Chemical resistant. Weathering resistant. Acid rain resistant.

Typical Applications: Threaded fasteners for the building, chemical process, oil and off shore industries.

Description: A recoatable “RC” coating developed to protect large fasteners and chemical processing equipment from chemical exposure (especially those with high pH). Although it contains a small percentage of PTFE lubricant to facilitate installation and prevent galling, it is considered a barrier coating rather than a dry film lubricant.

Main Properties:

Dry film lubricant. Corrosion resistant.

Typical Applications: Any mating surface which requires lubrication. Hinge pins. Piston casing. Compressors. Threaded fasteners. Description: This VOC compliant*, resin-bonded, PTFE based coating is primarily formulated for use on fasteners to prevent corrosion and facilitate make-up torque.

Xylan 1010, 1070, 1014, 1052 and now 1424 have been used as bolt coatings for almost a quarter century now. Most major Oil and Chemical Companies recognizing that maintenance is a huge issue have made coated bolt specifications for bolted high pressure flange connections. The various properties on the Xylan give excellent make up and brake out torque and reduce the need for high risk cutting torches or high cost bolt cutting when maintenance is required.

Tap end studs have a short thread length on the tap-end side typically threaded tor Class UN-3A fit. This side is screwed into a tapped hole. The nut end  of the stud is threaded with a Class UN-2A fit. Length of the stud is measured form end to end. The tap end has a chamfered point, but the nut end may have either a 30° or 45° chamfered end or round raduised end, at the customers option.The tap end can be measured from the end to last scratch, end of the chamfer to the last full thread or any combination of last scratch, last full thread, end or end of chamfer.

    Sigma coated bolts have a two-layer structure of special pretreatment polymer film and under-treatment layer. Phosphate Pre-treatment technique insures the physical performance of product without changing and fluropolymer top coating results in a better performance in resisting chemical and seawater corrosion. SermaGard coating is different from PTFE because of their strong corrosion resistant ability. Xylan can be different per customers request to meet various environmental working conditions.

    *This chart is for general practice purposes only and should not be in the engineering or design of any products. The most current edition of the API specification may be obtained on the API Standards website to make sure you have the most current edition of API 6A. For most the accurate references in critical situations torque values should be replaced with field measured tension values. Accurate stud tension is difficult to attain using torque, because friction has a significant effect on the torque–tension relationship. Any thread damage (however minor), additional lubrication, or standard deviations within the range can change friction and thereby the expected outcome.

    Xylan Coated Bolts

    Improve Make up and break out torque of bolts. Xylan is a fluoropolymer topcoat manufactured by Whitford Corporation, which in the 1014 and 1070 coatings afford high lubricity (co-efficient of friction as low as .02), and corrosion resistance of approximately 1000 hours(ASTM B117) when applied over phosphate, and up to 2000 hours when applied over electroplating. These are solvent based thin film topcoats. These Xylan products have a maximum temperature ranging up to 500 deg. F.  Xylan 1000 and 1400 series may also be applied over other basecoats, for added corrosion protection.  The 1400 series coatings by Whitford (typically 1424), are low voc coatings. They have a coefficient of friction of .05 to .10, and a maximum constant operating temperature of 400 deg. F. The corrosion resistance of the 1400 series is approximately 1500 hours, when applied over a suitable basecoat such as zinc electroplating.

    Sermagard Coated Bolts

    Sigma Fasteners is a licensed applicator for Sermagard products. 1105 is a ceramic-metallic sprayed basecoat that at 1 mil of thickness or more affords 3000-4000 hours of ASTM B117 salt spray resistance, with an appropriate topcoat. It can be used at high temperatures. It is extremely effective in salt atmospheres. The Sermagard 1105 process involves curing at high temperatures (Minimum of 750 deg. (F) and subsequent burnishing with appropriate blast media to achieve conductivity. Sermagard 1105 contains aluminum flake and Chromate. Sermagard 1280 is a fluorocarbon topcoat, which when applied to Sermagard 1105 basecoat gives superior corrosion resistance and UV protection.

    Moly Coated Bolts

    Molybdenum disulfide coated bolts are commonly used to improve the performance in extremes of load carrying capacity, operating temperature and coefficient of friction. This coating provides effective lubrication in a wide range of loads, in many cases exceeding 250,000 psi. Moly coatings lubricate sacrificially by transferring lubricant between the two mating surfaces, which helps to reduce both wear and the coefficient of friction. Moly coatings are a combination of molybdenum disulfide lubricant and high performance resins. The coating is thermally cured to bond thoroughly with the base metal of the coated part. Moly coated bolts can solve problems associated with corrosion, chemical exposure, and abrasion. offer excellent corrosion and chemical resistance and a barrier protection better than phosphate. With Moly’s exceptional barrier protection, it is appropriate for more severe environments and is often used in chemical processing and oil field equipment.

    PTFE Coated Bolts

    Over  seventy years ago a DuPont scientist, discovered polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) — a fluoropolymer that is corrosive chemical and heat resistance, and the world’s most slippery surface.  PTFE Coated Bolts have a Low Coefficient of Friction – The coefficient of friction of PTFE is generally in the range of 0.05 to 0.20, depending on the load, sliding speed, and particular PTFE coating used. PTFE Coated Bolts are Nonwetting – Since surfaces coated with PTFE are both oleophobic and hydrophobic, they are not readily wetted. Cleanup is easier and more thorough—in many cases, surfaces are self-cleaning. PTFE Coated Bolts are Heat Resistance – PTFE industrial coatings can operate continuously at temperatures up to 260°C/500°F.  PTFE Coated Bolts have Cryogenic Stability – Many PTFE industrial coatings withstand severe temperature extremes without loss of physical properties. PTFE industrial coatings may used at temperatures as low as -270°C/-454°F. PTFE Coated Bolts are Chemical Resistance – PTFE is normally unaffected by chemical environments. The only chemicals known to affect all PTFE industrial coatings are molten alkali metals and highly reactive fluorinating agents.
