Xylan Coated Bolts

Xylan 1010, 1070, 1014, 1052 and now 1424 have been used as bolt coatings for almost a quarter century now. Most major Oil and Chemical Companies recognizing that maintenance is a huge issue have made coated bolt specifications for bolted high pressure flange connections. The various properties on the Xylan give excellent make up and brake out torque and reduce the need for high risk cutting torches or high cost bolt cutting when maintenance is required.

Xylan 1014 in bolt coatings used for its good lubricity, chemical and abrasion resistance.

Xylan 1052 for coated bolts used for its excellent lubricity.

Xylan 1070 and 1010 where the pioneers in the field – used for the lubricity and chemical inertness.

With VOCs an ever present issue these days Whitford has made a low VOC version 1424 which Sigma applies to achieve the results need in a coated bolt connection and to stay complaint in a green economy.

Xylan coated bolts come in many tints and the coated bolts are often coordinated with standard corporate color branding schemes. While very light shades are possible most of the popular hues range from a Dark Yellow to black with Reds and Blues and greens being the most widespread.

12 point Flange Bolts

By Sigma Fasteners on November 19, 2016

12 point Flange Bolts or 12 point Flange Screw

Description:

These bolts feature a 12 drive surface head for high torque fit. The 12-point design provides the same bearing surface as hex or socket head cap screws of comparable size, and can fit in a confined space using  a standard 12-point socket.

Typical Usage: More than likely for use in a taped hole. 12 point head reduces the chance of tool slippage and the smaller head allows for use in confined areas on a narrow flange.

Other Common Names: Counterbore Screw,  Ferry Cap, Counterbore Screw, 12-point Flange bolt, 12-point flange screw

Inconel 718 Stud Bolts

By Sigma Fasteners on November 15, 2016

Inconel 718  Studs Nuts and Bolts

Tap end stud bolts are used in high pressure situations in the petrochemical industry for OEM and repair situations on flanged to main body connections. The tap end stud bolt has 2 A and 3A fit requirements to achieve complete connection

with one heavy hexagon nut, on the longer 2A fit side. The shorter 3A fit side is inserted into a threaded hole.

Inconel 718 is typically used in high strength applications where fastener operating temperatures can reach 700 degrees Celsius. Oxidization, thermal cycling and high pressures can create mayhem in bolted joints causing fasteners to loosen and lose grip strength.  The top wellhead and valve OEMs count on High Temperature Bolting both Studs and Bolts for extreme temperatures applications. Sigma Fasteners is a leader in manufacturing Inconel 718 bolting.

The advantages of our Inconel 718 products include

  • Minimize oxidation and corrosion at high temperature.
  • Optional coatings to minimize galling.
  • Available in metric and Inch threads

Sigma can lower your cost for tap end studs with contract pricing or managed inventory.Sigma can supply nuts and bolts or studs.

    Flange Bolts

By Sigma Fasteners on November 13, 2016

    Custom Flange Screw
    Custom Flange bolt

These hexagonal headed or double hex headed bolts are recognizable by the oversized washer face on the bolt head which forms a distinct ridge. This built-in washer under the head of the bolt distributes the fastening force over a large area. A flange bolt is designed to provide the clamping power over a washer and bolt combination. Available in both Hex Head and 12 point double hex head selections. The 12 Point Flange Bolts and Screws are an alternative head design with more torqueing force than standard hex cap screws. The twelve point design permits greater torque to be applied to the screw.

There are many critical design features of a flange bolt or flange screw including the fillet on the underside of the head. The fillet is the transitional curve from the bearing to the body of the fastener. Bearing surface on the flange screw or flange bolt is also key to its design integrating the extra grip strength. In addition, wrenching height on a flange bolt or flange screw is critical dimension that is measured from the top of the head to the top of the flange.

Sizes are available from ½ – 2 inch in a variety of ASTM fastener grade alloys and available to custom manufacture per print specifications.
These can be coated or plated with a variety of finishes. Xylan, PTFE, SermaGard and zinc and bake.

      Tap End Stud

By Sigma Fasteners on November 13, 2016

      Tap End Stud Bolts

Sigma Fasteners manufactures Tap End Stud bolts to your print, Tap End Stud Bolt Standard or AWHEM Standard in all ASTM grades.

      Tap End Stud Bolts
      Tap End Stud Bolts

Tap end studs have a short thread length on the tap-end side typically threaded tor Class UN-3A fit. This side is screwed into a tapped hole. The nut end  of the stud is threaded with a Class UN-2A fit. Length of the stud is measured form end to end. The tap end has a chamfered point, but the nut end may have either a 30° or 45° chamfered end or round raduised end, at the customers option. The tap end can be measured from the end to last scratch, end of the chamfer to the last full thread or any combination of last scratch, last full thread, end or end of chamfer.

Tap-end studs in standard and exotic metals with multiple finishes:

      ASTM B7, B7M, B8, B8M, 660,718, 17-4ph, MP35 and more.

Unfinished, SermaGard, Xylan, PTFE. Moly, zinc or cad plated.

Sigma can lower your cost for tap end studs with contract pricing or managed inventory.

        Zinc Phosphate Coating

By Sigma Fasteners on October 12, 2016

Zinc Phosphate coating is a crystalline conversion coating that is formed on a metal substrate. The phosphate process relies on the chemical reaction between the metal and the mildly acidic phosphate liquid to form insoluble crystalline phosphates on the surface of the part.

The phosphate coating is used as a pretreatment prior to painting, increasing corrosion protection, and providing for a better adhesion of the coating system.

When phos is used alone or in combination with oil (phos and oil) it lowers friction characteristics of sliding components or threaded parts. While typically called phos coating, phosphate alone has poor rust inhibiting characteristics and must be used in combination with oil or a top coat for corrosion protection. Zinc Phosphate can be applied to Ferric metals, but has no effect on Stainless Steel.

        Phosphate Coating Characteristics
        Color: dark gray / black
        Typical Use: Anti –Galling/Basecoat
        Top Coat: Oil or Paint
